1/48 Do 217M-1, WWII German bomber

The Dornier Do 217 was a heavy bomber of the Luftwaffe, developed on the basis of the successful Do 17, but with a reinforced structure and higher payload. It entered service at the beginning of World War II and a number of variants were developed, adapted for bombing, reconnaissance and special tasks.

The Do 217M-1 version was developed in 1943 as a solution to the shortage of BMW 801D engines, which were preferably reserved for fighter aircraft intended to defend German airspace. Engineers therefore modified the design of the Do 217K-1 to install the 1,750 hp Daimler-Benz DB 603A engines fitted with four-bladed propellers. These powerplants increased the machine's top speed to 557 km/h, albeit at the cost of a slightly reduced range. The defensive armament and the ability to carry bomb loads remained identical to the K variant.

The 217M-1 was produced concurrently with the K-1 type and deployed with Luftwaffe bomber and reconnaissance units until the end of the war. The machines participated in strikes against ground targets, night raids and long reconnaissance flights over occupied Europe and later over the Reich itself.
